SLED Thanks Partners for Ongoing Support on Dogfighting Awareness Day

Wednesday, Apr 8, 2026

SLED is proud to partner with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in supporting National Dogfighting Awareness Day.

The ASPCA officially designated April 8 as National Dogfighting Awareness Day in 2014 and is dedicated to raising awareness about the cruel practice of dogfighting.

SLED’s Dogfighting Unit was established in 2023 with the support of Governor McMaster and  the General Assembly and has worked with local, state, federal, and community partners to rescue hundreds of dogs and arrest those responsible for the illegal activity. Since the Unit was established, SLED has helped to rescue over 900 dogs.

In 2025, SLED arrested 55 individuals and rescued nearly 500 dogs out of cruel and inhumane conditions. So far this year, SLED arrested 11 subjects and rescued 42 dogs.

SLED continues to collaborate with law enforcement and animal rescue partners to address dogfighting statewide.

SLED’s Dogfighting Unit was honored last year by the ASPCA for the team’s exceptional leadership, compassion, and commitment to animal welfare.
