Thursday, Feb 12, 2026

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in Charleston County.

Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call for service regarding shots fired at a home on Edenborough Road in Johns Island, SC, the evening of Tuesday, February 10, 2026. Deputies located the subject’s vehicle at a gas station early Wednesday morning and attempted a traffic stop. The subject fled the traffic stop and drove back to the home on Edenborough Road. When the subject exited the vehicle, deputies discovered he was armed with a pistol. The armed man then ran into the nearby woods. Deputies searched for the armed man and encountered him in the wooded area. During the encounter, deputies attempted to tase the man. There was then an exchange of gunfire where the armed man shot a deputy and deputies then shot the armed man. The man died at the scene. The deputy was struck in his ballistic vest. The deputy was evaluated by EMS at the scene and later at the hospital. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Floriberto Perez-Nieto, 34. SLED was requested to investigate by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time.

SLED conducts law enforcement officer involved shooting (OIS) investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident or the agency with jurisdiction. When requested to investigate an OIS, SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances. SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.

The incident in Charleston County is the 7th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026. This is the 1st officer involved shooting for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office this year.

In 2025, there were 45 officer involved shootings in South Carolina. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office had no officer involved shootings last year.
