SLED investigating fatal shooting in Berkeley County involving off-duty police officer

Agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in Berkeley County.
An off-duty Summerville Police Department officer and Michael O’Neal, 39, engaged in an altercation at a Chick-fil-A located at 1312 North Main Street in Summerville, SC. O’Neal was shot by the off-duty officer and died at the scene. The off-duty officer was taken to the hospital for his injuries. SLED was requested to investigate by the Summerville Police Department.
This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time.
